Day Trip from Seoul: 10 Best Public Transport Courses Guide

WeBring ·

If you want a car-free day trip from Seoul, the subway, intercity buses, and ITX trains are all you need. This guide is organized around the route so you can follow it straight from Naver Map or KakaoMap.

Five-minute prep before you leave

  • One T-money card, with its transfer discounts, handles about 80% of the day's transit.
  • The subway's last trains run around midnight, so aim to be back in Seoul by 9-10pm to be safe.
  • Courses using ITX (Gapyeong, Chuncheon) start with a KORAIL reservation; book 1-2 days ahead for weekends and holidays.

The 10 courses by difficulty

  • Beginner (few transfers): Suwon, Incheon, Ilsan, Gwangmyeong Cave — a single subway line or one transfer
  • Intermediate (transfer + some walking): Namhansanseong, Dumulmeori and Semiwon — subway plus bus
  • Advanced (ITX or intercity timing): Nami Island, Chuncheon, Paju, Everland — booking required

Three signature courses

Suwon Hwaseong is a UNESCO fortress built by King Jeongjo (about 5.74 km of wall); take Line 1 to Suwon Station, transfer to a city bus, and walk just the Haenggung-dong and Paldalmun highlight stretch for 2-3 hours. In Incheon, it is a 5-minute walk from Line 1 Incheon Station to link Chinatown, the Songwol-dong Fairytale Village, and a seaside stroll at Wolmido. Namhansanseong is a UNESCO fortress about 25 km southeast of Seoul (roughly 12.4 km of wall); ride Line 8 to Sanseong Station, transfer to a bus, and enjoy a light wall hike with views.

In short: With one T-money card and a sense of the last train, you can day-trip to Suwon, Incheon, or Namhansanseong without a car. ITX courses (Gapyeong, Chuncheon, Nami Island) need a KORAIL reservation, and walking just the 2-3 hour highlight stretch is easier on both your legs and your enjoyment.
