I live in Seoul and want to explore outside the city on weekends. What are the best day trip destinations, and how do I get there using public transportation?
1 Answer
Seoul is surrounded by amazing day trip spots all reachable by public transportation. Nami Island in Chuncheon is one of the most popular and you can get there by taking the ITX train from Yongsan Station to Gapyeong in about an hour, then a short ferry ride. While in the area, the Garden of Morning Calm and Petite France are nearby.
Suwon is just 30 minutes on the subway (Line 1) and has the stunning Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Incheon is also on the subway and has Chinatown, Wolmido Island, and great seafood. For nature lovers, Bukhansan National Park is technically still in Seoul and has incredible hiking trails. Sokcho on the east coast takes about 2.5 hours by express bus from Dong Seoul Terminal and gives you access to Seoraksan National Park. The DMZ and JSA tours depart from Seoul daily and are a unique experience. Ganghwa Island is about 90 minutes by bus and has ancient dolmen sites and beautiful tidal flats. Use the Express Bus Terminal at Gangnam or Dong Seoul Terminal for intercity buses, and check schedules on the Bustago app.
