Privacy policy

1. What we collect

This service does not collect resident registration, passport or alien registration numbers, nor sensitive data such as health or beliefs. If you write such details into a post yourself, we remove that part or ask you to edit it.

Article and question-and-answer pages carry Google AdSense advertising. Fetching an ad lets Google and its partners use cookies and similar technology to process your IP address, device and browser details and your visit history; that processing is Google's, under Google's policies, not ours. You can turn personalised advertising off yourself in Google's Ads settings. Advertising appears on article and question-and-answer pages; the About, Contact and Privacy pages carry none.

Beyond that we have installed no analytics tracker. Your browser's localStorage holds the session token that keeps you signed in, plus your display language; the token is sent to the server with each request to authenticate you, and signing out removes it.

2. Why we use it

• Identifying you at sign-in and confirming that a post is yours
• Running the community — publishing, ordering and moderating questions and answers
• Improving the service and understanding aggregate usage
• Sending the newsletter and similar information to members who consented
• Responding to breaches of the law or the terms, and meeting legal obligations

3. How long we keep it

We destroy data without delay once its purpose is met. Deleting a question that other members have answered would remove the context of their replies, so on request we can instead detach your name from it and keep the thread anonymous.

4. Processors and international transfers

Each processor handles the data only for the work entrusted to it, under a contract requiring it to keep the data safe. We do not provide your personal data to third parties beyond what this policy states, except with your prior consent or when an investigative authority requests it through a lawful procedure.

If you start a consultation on KakaoTalk or WhatsApp, that messenger's own policy applies to the conversation as well.

When a question or an answer is posted, a notification email goes to the operator's own mailboxes — a webring.kr address and the operating manager's Gmail address — so it can be answered quickly. That email contains the title, the author's nickname and account email, and the opening of the text.

5. What is public

This is a community: your nickname, what you post and when you posted it are visible to anyone, signed in or not, and can be indexed by search engines. Your email address is never published.

Posting anonymously hides your name on the page and in search results. The link between your account and the post remains internally for moderation, so it is pseudonymous rather than fully unlinkable.

Images you upload, including your profile picture, are stored at a public address, so anyone who has the link can open them without signing in. Deleting a post removes the image from the page; ask us if you need the file itself deleted.

6. Your rights and how to use them

You may access, correct or delete your personal data and ask us to stop processing it at any time. Signed in, you can change your nickname and profile picture yourself on the profile page; for anything else — closing your account, withdrawing marketing consent — write to mycho@webring.kr and we will act on it.

7. What the page itself loads

Pages on this site also load the family widget script from the WeBring hub (www.webring.kr) and the in-article images hosted on the blog (mywebring.com, en.mywebring.com). All three are run by the same company.

Making those requests tells those servers your IP address and browser details, as it must for the file to arrive. The exception is the advertising on article and Q&A pages, where Google processes data for advertising under its own policies, as set out in section 1.

8. How we protect it

• All traffic is encrypted with HTTPS.
• Passwords are hashed by the authentication service; we cannot read your password.
• Row-level security in the database restricts each member to their own private data.
• Access to personal data is limited to the operating staff who need it.

9. Privacy contact

When the law or the service changes and this policy has to change with it, we post the change and the date it takes effect on this page.
