In Gyeongju the location of your bed decides the itinerary more than the price does. The three areas are genuinely different, and the choice even determines whether you need a car.
A. Hwangnidan-gil and Daereungwon — without a car
Dense with cafes and small shops, and Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon are a five-minute walk. The best base for car-free travellers, and pleasant to walk at night.
B. Gyochon and Woljeonggyo — for the hanok night views
Some stays are a one-minute walk from Woljeonggyo. The real value here is the quiet early-morning walk once the day crowds have gone.
C. Bomun Lake — with a car, and rest in mind
Lake views, large cafes, resorts. But it is 10-15 minutes by car to Hwangnidan-gil, so without a car it is not an option.
When to book
Hanok stays fill two to three weeks ahead on weekends and during late-March blossom and late-October foliage — a month ahead in peak season.
Names worth knowing: Dihyu inside Gyochon (a minute from Woljeonggyo), Cheonggong near Bulguksa, the newly built Cheongjae Hanok, and the Kolon Hotel at Bomun.
Take the cafes off the main street
The famous cafes on Hwangnidan-gil's main street mean a 30 to 50 minute wait at weekends. One block in, the same atmosphere comes without the queue.
