Busan's Songjeong Beach is widely held to be Korea's most beginner-friendly surf spot, for a concrete reason: a sandy bottom and gently deepening water.
On a good spring or autumn weekday, more than 80% of first-timers stand up on the whitewash within one to two hours.
Close enough for your arrival day
Five minutes' walk from Songjeong Station on the Donghae Line, 15 minutes by car from Haeundae. You can be in the water the day you land in Busan.
Cost and timing
- One lesson — about 2 hours (30 min theory + 90 min practice, 60-90 min in the water). 60,000-80,000 won (weekends and peak +10,000)
- Board and wetsuit only — 30,000 won for 3 hours, self-entry, no instructor
- Golden hours — 7-10am and 4-7pm: light wind, clean wave lines
- Bring a swimsuit, towel and aqua shoes. Minimum age is usually 10
How a lesson runs
Book by KakaoTalk or Naver, the day before. Peak times — July, August and weekends — fill a week ahead.
On the day, arrive 30 minutes early for your wetsuit and soft-top board, do 30 minutes of theory on land (request an English lesson in advance), then 60-90 minutes in the whitewash with the instructor pushing you into waves from behind.
Most shops include a hot shower (free to 1,000 won) and send the instructor's photographs by KakaoTalk.
The best windows
Weekdays in May and weekdays from late September to early October — mild water and uncrowded.
Peak summer is warmer but busy and dearer. Winter works too with a 4 mm wetsuit.
