How can I check which calculators and reference materials are allowed in a Korean university exam?
An international student in Busan is preparing for a first midterm exam in an engineering course. The syllabus lists the exam date but does not say whether calculators or a formula sheet are allowed. What should the student ask the lecturer or teaching assistant before the exam, including whether a particular calculator model is permitted?

Ask the lecturer or teaching assistant for the rules for that particular exam before you bring a calculator or reference sheet. Check the course learning platform and recent announcements as well as the syllabus. Do not assume that another course’s rules apply.
Send the calculator’s exact brand and model, and ask whether you can use its scientific, graphing, programmable or symbolic-algebra functions. If it stores notes or formulas, ask whether you must clear its memory and how the examiner will check it. Ask whether the lecturer provides a formula sheet or allows you to bring one. If you can bring your own, confirm the paper size, number of pages or sides, whether it must be handwritten, and whether worked examples are allowed. Also check whether dictionaries, textbooks, printed notes or electronic devices are permitted.
You could write: ‘Hello Professor, I’m preparing for the midterm in [course and section]. May I use a [brand and exact model] calculator? Are there any memory or function restrictions? May we bring a formula sheet, and if so, what are the rules for its size and contents? Could you also confirm which other reference materials we may use?’ Attach a model link or photo if that would help identify the calculator.
Ask the lecturer or TA to share the answer through the course announcement system so students can refer to the same instructions. Keep their reply and check for updates before the exam. If you receive no answer, arrive early and ask the invigilator before using any aid; keep unapproved materials put away unless the examiner gives permission.
