Clear one thing up first. Yeongsil and Eorimok do not lead to the Baengnokdam summit. Both are return hikes to Witse Oreum.
The summit is reached via Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa, and those require a separate trail reservation. This is where a first-timer aiming for the top gets turned around on the mountain.
Yeongsil — the views
From Yeongsil Rest Area to Witse Oreum is about 1.5 hours one way. You get the rock formations, and you pay for them with exposed, windy sections.
Eorimok — the forest
Eorimok to Witse Oreum runs about 2 hours one way, with steep steps early on. It starts in the trees and takes less wind.
Those are uphill figures. Add the descent, your breaks, and the walk from the bus stop to get the real length of the outing. Skipping that arithmetic is how people meet the cutoff time.
Bus 240 gets you close, not to the trailhead
Bus 240 serves both approaches, but the stop is not the start of the trail.
- Yeongsil ticket office → Yeongsil Rest Area: add about 2.5 km, 40 minutes on foot
- Eorimok entrance stop also leaves a walk to the trail
Where to get water and food
Yeongsil has a shop at the rest area; Eorimok has none on the trail. Going up Eorimok, buy before you set out.
Check before you leave
Yeongsil and Eorimok normally need no reservation, but weather closures and entry cutoffs still apply. Check the Hallasan National Park official site the day before and the morning of, for closures and the entry and descent deadlines.
Bring a windproof, waterproof layer and hiking shoes with grip. As a beginner, make Witse Oreum and back the goal, and turn round when the weather or your legs say so.
If Hallasan sounds like too much
Jeju has 368 oreum you can summit in 30 to 60 minutes. Choosing one over Hallasan is not a compromise, it is a different trip.
