Visiting a Korean traditional village means walking through living heritage where residents actually live, not just sightseeing. Andong Hahoe, Gyeongju Yangdong, Jeonju Hanok, and Bukchon are inhabited, so the etiquette differs.
Key etiquette
- Gates and walls: look from the road; don't push your head or camera inside
- Photographing residents: ask 'May I take a photo?' first; no secret or close-up shots
- Noise: keep a low tone in alleys; no group shouting or speakers
- Drones: only in pre-approved areas; no flying over homes
- Smoking and litter: designated areas only; no walking-smoking or dumping
Note
Since 2018, Bukchon restricts entry to some areas at night (after 5pm). Remember the village is where people sleep and eat, not a film set.
