Seoul's Biggest Underground Arcade Is Gotomall — 90 Minutes End to End

WeBring ·

Can you finish a shopping trip in Seoul on a rainy day without once stepping above ground? Yes, if you pick the right station. The surest answer is Gotomall under Express Bus Terminal Station, where roughly 620 shops run in a single line beneath the junction of Lines 3, 7 and 9. Walked slowly from one end to the other, it takes about 90 minutes.

Which station to go under

  • Express Bus Terminal Gotomall — Lines 3, 7, 9. Women's fashion and household goods. About 620 shops, mostly KRW 10,000–30,000
  • Gangnam Station Underground — Line 2 and Shinbundang. Casual wear and accessories. About 230 shops, KRW 10,000–50,000
  • Myeongdong–Euljiro Underground — Myeongdong, Euljiro 1-ga and 3-ga. Sundries and a food court. About 300 shops, KRW 5,000–30,000
  • Yongsan shopping district — Line 1 and the Gyeongui–Jungang line. Electronics and gaming. About 200 shops, KRW 30,000–300,000
  • Dongdaemun underground link — Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, Lines 2, 4, 5. Wholesale fashion and late-night hours. About 150 shops, KRW 5,000–20,000

Inside Gotomall, the line running toward Exit 8 is where blouses and skirts in the KRW 10,000–20,000 range cluster, and the food corners — tteokbokki cooked on the spot, eomuk, mini gimbap — will feed you for under KRW 5,000. Buying two or more items usually earns a KRW 1,000–2,000 discount or a small giveaway, so it is worth asking.

What time to arrive

The Seoul Facilities Corporation FAQ lists terminal underground arcade hours as 10:00 to 22:00. Neither 24-hour trading nor air conditioning is guaranteed, and individual shops vary, so check before you travel. Saturday afternoons between 14:00 and 17:00 get shoulder-to-shoulder crowded, and weekday commuting hours — 07:00 to 09:00 and 18:00 to 20:00 — are worth avoiding as well.

Do not assume everything connects underground

Plan Myeongdong Station's arcade and the Euljiro pedestrian network separately. If you assume the whole stretch from Myeongdong to Euljiro 4-ga runs underground, you will end up surfacing partway. Check the operator's floor plan and the exact exit first, and build the above-ground segment into your schedule. Yongsan works the same way: the electronics district is not one continuous underground mall, so decide which building and which shop you want before you work out the route from the station.

Paying without losing money

A merchant that accepts credit cards cannot refuse you or treat you worse for paying by card. A card surcharge is not a normal shopping practice — if a shop insists on cash only, walk to the next one, and always take the receipt. The same item varies in quality and price between stalls, so confirming the final price before you pay is the habit that keeps money in your pocket. For second-hand electronics, compare the model number, condition, included accessories and warranty separately rather than trusting the shelf price alone.
