How do taxi apps work in Korea? I have heard of Kakao Taxi and Tada. How do I set them up, and what should I expect when using taxis here?

Taxi apps in Korea have transformed urban transport. Here is what to know.

Kakao T (formerly Kakao Taxi). The dominant app. Used by 90 percent of Korean taxi users. Download Kakao T from the app store, sign up with phone number, and link your Korean credit card or KakaoPay. The English mode works well. To book, set pickup and destination, then choose taxi type (regular, deluxe black, or premium). Taxis arrive within 5 to 15 minutes typically.

For language. The app translates communication, but the driver may call you. Use the app's chat feature for clearer communication. If your destination is complex, set the exact pin on the map.

Payment. Auto-charged to your linked card or KakaoPay at the end of the ride. Receipts available in the app. No need to handle cash. Tipping is not customary.

Tada. Originally an Uber-like service with private drivers. Now operates as Tada Plus (premium black cab service) and Tada Light (a regular taxi network). Less coverage than Kakao T but quality cars and English-friendly drivers. Useful for airport runs or business meetings.

Uber Korea. Has returned to Korea in limited fashion through Uber Black (premium service) and Uber Taxi. International users can use their existing Uber app and account in Korea. Coverage is mainly in Seoul.

Hailing on the street. Empty taxis show a red light on the dashboard 빈차 (empty). Tell the driver your destination clearly or show the address on your phone (Naver Map or Kakao Map). Korean Cargo Taxis (call them 모범택시, deluxe black) have higher fares.

Fares. Base fare in Seoul is around 4,800 won for the first 2 km, then increases by distance and time. A 5 km ride costs roughly 8,000 to 12,000 won. Midnight surcharge (12 am to 4 am) is 20 percent. Airport-special long-distance rides can run 70,000 to 100,000 won from Seoul to Incheon Airport.

For airport. Pre-booking Kakao T at 50,000 to 70,000 won flat rate is convenient. Or take the Airport Express limousine bus for 16,000 won.

Taxi quality is generally excellent. Drivers are licensed, cars are inspected. Issues can be reported through Kakao T.
