A seowon and hyanggyo tour is a Korean-style road trip through the Confucian (Neo-Confucian) academies of the Joseon era. You can combine the 9 UNESCO 'Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies' with hyanggyo courses.
Seowon vs hyanggyo
Hyanggyo were public local schools (up to 329 nationwide), while seowon were private Neo-Confucian academies of the 16th and 17th centuries. Both combine study halls and ritual shrines in one complex, but their operators differ.
The 9 UNESCO seowon
Inscribed in 2019, the nine seowon show how Neo-Confucianism from China took root in Korea. They group into four routes (Yeongnam, Jeolla, Daegu-Gyeongnam, Wanju); just follow the route and opening hours.
