A passport running out is not only a passport problem. Because of a rule in force since 1 July 2021, the question stops being whether you can extend your stay and becomes how short that extension will be.
Your passport expiry is your stay cap
From 1 July 2021, when granting stay permission the Ministry of Justice grants the period only within the passport's validity. Qualify for a two-year extension with six months left on the passport, and you may get six months.
Extensions that used to run one to two years get split into three- and six-month pieces, which means the appointments, the paperwork and the fees repeat.
A new passport means a report within 15 days
Your residence card expiry is tied to your period of stay, so a short extension pulls the card's expiry forward with it. And a new passport counts as a change to the number, the issue date and the validity, so a registered foreign resident must report it to the local immigration office within 15 days.

Banks and telecom: a KYC problem, not an automatic block
Banks do not simply freeze accounts. But if your passport or stay information is invalid or out of date, you get held at real-name verification and customer due diligence. That means extra documents or delays on higher-risk actions — opening an account or card, sending money abroad. Telecom providers run the same checks.
The order matters
- Renew the passport as early as you can, to restore validity
- Report the change within 15 days through HiKorea
- Then apply for the extension, so it can run as long as the new passport allows
- Update your bank and telecom records
