On a one-night Gyeongju trip the decision is not what to see but which area gets which day. The two are about 30 minutes apart by car, so mixing them means driving the same road twice.
The two areas
- The temples, east on Tohamsan — Bulguksa and Seokguram
- Downtown — Daereungwon and Hwangnidan-gil
The rule is simple: arriving in the afternoon, start downtown; arriving in the morning, start with the temples. The temples keep shorter hours and a late start cuts them off.
Hours and fees
- Bulguksa and Seokguram — 09:00-18:00, free
- Daereungwon — 09:00-22:00, free (only Cheonmachong charges, 3,000 won)
- Hwangnidan-gil — shops 12:00-23:00
Two more things worth knowing: winter hours (November to February) may run 30 minutes shorter, and foreign visitors carrying an ARC or passport get a discount at some sites.
Why this combination suits a first visit
Silla's UNESCO sites (Bulguksa, Seokguram), the downtown royal tombs (Daereungwon) and a modern shopping street (Hwangnidan-gil) are three different kinds of place. Nothing repeats itself inside a day.
Optional additions
