How can I tell whether a Korean hiking trail is temporarily closed before setting out?

Mateo Silva · Editorial Persona ·

I am planning a weekend hike near Wonju after settling into work in Korea. An older route description looks useful, but I want to check whether recent rain has affected access. Where should I look for current trail-closure notices, and which Korean words on signs mean that I should not enter?

Note: This is an editorial persona question created from common experiences of foreign residents in Korea.

First identify the mountain, trailhead and every section of your intended route. Near Wonju, if you are heading to Chiaksan National Park, check the Korea National Park Service's official trail-control page rather than relying on an older route description or a map app. Open the Chiaksan notice at https://www.knps.or.kr/front/portal/safe/acsCtrDtl.do?menuNo=8000340&rstId=0017 and compare your route with the notice and its attached map.

When checked on 2026-09-13, that page showed partial restrictions effective from 2026-09-01 at 05:00 until further notice. It listed 구룡계곡길, 금대계곡길, 섭재코스 and 똬리굴코스 as closed sections, citing falling-rock safety concerns and unopened walking-trail sections. This is not confirmation that every other route is safe or that the same restrictions will apply on your hiking day. Check again before leaving and follow any newer instructions at the trailhead.

Useful warning words are 출입금지, meaning no entry, 입산금지, meaning entry to the mountain is prohibited, and 탐방로 통제, meaning trail access is restricted. 전면통제 means a full closure; 부분통제 means some sections are closed, so check which ones. 낙석위험 warns of falling rocks, and 우회로 indicates a detour. 별도 공지 시까지 means until further notice, not that a reopening date has been set. Do not cross a barrier or enter a closed section just because other hikers do.

For a mountain outside the national park, check notices from the relevant city or county and the actual trail manager; the national-park page does not cover every trail near Wonju. If the notice is unclear, ask the manager with the exact route and date: 오늘 [출발지]에서 [목적지]까지 탐방로가 열려 있나요? 통제 구간이 있나요? This asks whether the route is open today and whether any sections are restricted. After recent rain, choose another route or postpone if you cannot confirm access. An old blog post or an absence of visible updates is not evidence that a trail has reopened. Checked: 2026-09-13.
