D-2 students need to track their permitted period of stay separately from any permission to work. Admission to a university or a job offer does not automatically extend your stay or authorize employment.
Student stay upkeep is a maintenance step in the Korean visa and immigration sequence. If you are near the eight-year limit, see extending D-2 at the 8-year limit; for funds, see when to prepare proof of funds.
Check your expiry date and academic status
- Check the expiry date of your own permitted stay. If you need to remain longer, prepare an extension application before that date and confirm the documents required for your status and circumstances.
- Before taking leave, withdrawing or changing schools, ask your university's international office and immigration how the change may affect your stay.
- Keep track of attendance and grades, and prepare enrollment and academic records. Do not assume that every university uses the same attendance or grade thresholds.
Confirm permission before starting a part-time job
Ordinary student part-time employment requires immigration permission before work begins. Prepare an employment contract, obtain the university advisor's confirmation, apply online or in person, and check that permission has been granted.
- Check the document list, including your passport, residence card, application form, student part-time employment confirmation, employer's business registration copy and standard employment contract. Ask whether academic, attendance or Korean proficiency records are also required.
- Permitted hours vary by program, year of study and Korean proficiency, among other conditions. Do not treat the hours quoted in the original blog as a universal allowance. Check the workplace, activities and hours covered by your permission.
Confirm your eligibility and current requirements with your international office and HiKorea. The original blog provides background; current official guidance should take priority when you apply.
