It is easy to assume each visa comes with its own required insurance policy. What actually differs is not the type of insurance but the route by which you enter the National Health Insurance scheme — whether you arrive through employment or simply through length of stay.
Employment and length of stay are the two tests
If you are employed by a company or school, you are enrolled as an employee subscriber, with the premium split evenly between you and your employer. Without an employment relationship you become a local subscriber, and since July 2019 foreign residents staying six months or longer are subject to mandatory enrolment in that category. In practice this means an instructor employed by an academy or school usually enters as an employee subscriber, while a student enters as a local subscriber.
If you are here to study
Coverage applies once six months have passed since entry. The premium is calculated from income and property, and a reduction scheme applies to students, but both the calculation basis and the level of reduction have been revised in the past. Rather than relying on a figure someone quotes you, confirm what currently applies to you with the National Health Insurance Service on 1577-1000. Some universities brief incoming students on this or contribute toward the cost, so it is worth asking your international office too.
If you are employed, as instructors usually are
You should be registered as an employee subscriber from the point employment begins. Some academies additionally provide a group policy. That policy is separate from National Health Insurance and is not a legal requirement, which is the source of a recurring problem: an employer provides private cover only and never files the health insurance enrolment. Check your own enrolment status rather than assuming the group policy means it was handled.
What national coverage does not reach
Even with National Health Insurance, dental work, traditional Korean medicine and non-covered procedures leave real costs with you. If you are planning orthodontic treatment or expect frequent visits, supplementary indemnity insurance or a dental rider is worth pricing. Before buying, check whether your employer or university already provides group cover, because overlapping policies frequently add cost without adding protection. You can check your own enrolment through the four social insurances information portal or directly with the service.
Condition-by-condition detail and how to choose private cover are in the visa and insurance guide on the WeBring blog.
