I'm getting married to my Korean partner and will apply for the F-6 visa?
I'm getting married to my Korean partner and will apply for the F-6 visa. How does NHIS (National Health Insurance) work for F-6 visa holders? I previously had private insurance in Korea — is it different now that I'll be married?

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! Once you receive your F-6 visa, you become eligible for NHIS as a dependent on your Korean spouse s plan rather than as an individual subscriber. This is a significant benefit because instead of paying the full individual premium, you are added to your spouse s plan and the family premium is based on your spouse s income.
The transition from private insurance to NHIS is straightforward. After your F-6 visa is issued and your ARC is updated, visit your local NHIS branch with your ARC, marriage certificate, and your spouse s NHIS information. They will process the enrollment and add you as a dependent. Your coverage starts from the enrollment date. If you had private insurance before, you can cancel it once NHIS coverage is confirmed. NHIS covers around 70% of medical costs including hospital visits, prescriptions, dental basics, and health checkups. You will also be eligible for the free national health screening that is offered every 1 to 2 years. One thing to note is that if you later get a job on the F-6 visa, your employer will handle NHIS enrollment through the workplace plan.
