How do I pay electricity, gas, water, and other utility bills in Korea?

There are several easy ways to pay electricity, gas, water, and other bills in Korea, and most people set it and forget it. The most convenient is automatic transfer (자동이체) from your Korean bank account: register once with each provider (KEPCO for electricity, your regional city gas company, the district waterworks) by phone, on their site or app, or with a short form, and the amount is deducted automatically each month so you never miss a due date. Many people also register the bills for automatic payment on a credit card.

If you prefer to pay each time, every paper bill (고지서) has a giro number at the bottom, and you can pay it at a bank counter or ATM by entering the giro number, or at a convenience store where the clerk scans the bill and you pay cash or card. Digitally, banking apps and simple-pay apps like Kakao Pay, Naver Pay, and Toss let you pay giro bills or registered utilities from your phone. One important note: if you live in an apartment or officetel, many utilities are bundled into a single monthly management fee (관리비) billed by the building office, which you pay by transfer to the management account, so check whether that is your situation first, since you may only have one bill. To set up automatic transfer you generally need your ARC and a Korean bank account, and watch the due date (납기일) since a late payment can add a small surcharge. Setting up 자동이체 or card auto-pay once is the way to go.
