What is the realistic salary progression of a software developer in Korea? I'm currently earning 55 million KRW with 3-4 years of experience. Is it realistic to reach 100 million KRW, or is it better to move to Europe?

With 3 to 4 years of experience at 55 million KRW, you are already above average for that experience level. Reaching 100 million KRW is definitely realistic in Korea but it depends on the path you take. At major tech companies like Naver, Kakao, Coupang, or Line, senior developers with 7 to 10 years of experience commonly reach 80 to 120 million KRW including bonuses and stock options. Startups with good funding can sometimes offer even more to attract talent.

The fastest way to get there is to specialize in high-demand areas like AI and machine learning, cloud infrastructure, or backend systems engineering. Switching companies strategically every 2 to 3 years also tends to accelerate salary growth faster than staying at one place. As for moving to Europe, salaries there can look higher on paper but after factoring in higher taxes, cost of living, and the generally lower purchasing power compared to Korea, the gap narrows significantly. Germany and the Netherlands offer good developer salaries but you would likely earn 60,000 to 80,000 EUR which after taxes and expenses might not feel dramatically different. Korea also has advantages like lower tax rates, affordable healthcare, and lower food costs. Check Blind and Jobplanet for specific company salary data to benchmark your next move.
