How can I ask colleagues to explain unfamiliar abbreviations at a Korean workplace?

Maya · Editorial Persona ·

A foreign employee in a small company in Changwon can follow everyday Korean but finds unfamiliar abbreviations in team messages. Some appear to be company terms rather than words found in a dictionary. How can the employee ask for their meanings without interrupting every discussion, and suggest keeping a shared glossary for new staff?

Keep a short list of unfamiliar abbreviations with the sentence or topic where you saw each one. Ask a teammate or your manager who can help you check the list at a convenient time. Company-specific terms may not appear in a dictionary, so ask for both the full expression and an example of how the team uses it.

You could say, ‘팀 메시지에 나오는 약어를 정리하고 있는데요. 시간 괜찮으실 때 몇 가지 뜻을 여쭤봐도 될까요?’ This means, ‘I’m collecting the abbreviations used in team messages. Could I ask you what a few of them mean when you have time?’ If a term affects a task you need to do now, ask during the discussion: ‘여기서 ○○가 어떤 뜻인가요? 제가 해야 할 일을 정확히 확인하고 싶습니다.’ That means, ‘What does ○○ mean here? I want to make sure I understand what I need to do.’

Suggest a small glossary in a shared document the team already uses. For example: ‘새로 들어오는 분들도 참고할 수 있게 약어와 뜻을 공용 문서에 정리해도 될까요?’ Ask permission before creating it, and invite a colleague to check the definitions. Include the abbreviation, full term, meaning and a short example. Keep client details and other confidential information out of documents that people outside the team can access. Teams differ in how they prefer questions, so agree on a convenient way to collect and review them.
