How long does a Korean prescription stay valid before the pharmacy refuses it?

Amara Nwosu · Editorial Persona ·

I was given a prescription at a clinic in Incheon but the pharmacy next door had closed, and I ended up not filling it that day. It has now been about a week. I want to know how many days a prescription is usable, whether any pharmacy can dispense it or only one near the clinic, and what I do if it has expired.

A Korean prescription is normally valid for a limited number of days from the date of issue, and a week later it may well have lapsed — take it to a pharmacy and ask before assuming either way.

The validity period is printed on the prescription itself, so look at the document rather than relying on a general rule. It is stated in Korean on the form, and the pharmacist will read it in seconds if you hand it over. That is the fastest way to find out where you stand.

On which pharmacy: any pharmacy can dispense it. There is no requirement to use the one next to the clinic, which is a common misunderstanding because pharmacies cluster around clinics for convenience rather than obligation. If the pharmacy beside the clinic was closed, one near your home or workplace will fill the same prescription.

If it has expired, you cannot have it dispensed and you will need a new prescription. That normally means returning to the clinic. Some clinics will reissue without a full consultation if the visit was recent and nothing has changed, but many will treat it as a new visit with a new consultation fee, so call ahead and ask rather than travelling there expecting a quick reissue.

One habit that prevents this entirely: fill prescriptions on the day you receive them. Pharmacies in Korea are numerous and usually open into the evening, and there are two ways to find one open now. The emergency medical portal e-gen (e-gen.or.kr) lists pharmacies currently open in your area, and the 129 health and welfare counselling line can direct you by phone. For a prescription that has already lapsed, contact the clinic in Incheon that issued it and explain the situation before making the trip.
