My Korean driver's license is up for renewal — what is the process for foreigners, and is a medical check required?

Ratha Pich ·

I am from Cambodia and got my Korean Class 1 license eight years ago. Renewal is coming up next month. Is the process different for foreigners, and besides the ARC do I need any extra documents?

Do I need an eye exam or medical check, and what happens if I miss the renewal window?

The renewal process for foreigners is not very different from Koreans. A Class 1 license has an aptitude test at renewal, so you need a vision test, usually done at a driver's license exam office or a designated hospital. Bring your Alien Registration Card and make sure the stay period on it is still valid, because if your residence period is almost up it can complicate the renewal, so it is better to extend your visa first. You can renew at the Korea Road Traffic Authority's integrated civil affairs site or at a nearby exam office, and for Class 1 you apply for the aptitude test, do the vision test, submit a photo, and pay the fee. If you miss the renewal window (within one year before expiry) you are charged a fine, and leaving it much longer can lead to cancellation, so do not delay. If you need English help, you can ask for foreigner assistance at the exam office, and larger offices like in Gangnam or Busan tend to handle this more smoothly.
