When does National Health Insurance usually begin for a new international student in Korea?
I will start university in Daegu and the school also offers a separate student insurance plan. I want to understand when National Health Insurance normally begins and what I should check before paying for overlapping coverage.
Note: This is an editorial persona question created from common experiences of foreign residents in Korea.

The start date depends on how you are insured. If you work at an insured workplace, employee coverage generally follows the workplace eligibility process. For a student who is not employee-insured, the NHIS foreigner guidance says foreigners and overseas Koreans staying in Korea for over six months are generally subject to mandatory self-employed coverage, and it lists D-2 student status among the eligible visa types. Because your exact eligibility date can depend on your residence registration, visa status, entry and stay history, do not calculate it only from the semester start date. Check the NHIS notice or bill sent to your registered address and call NHIS at 1577-1000 or its English consultation line at 033-811-2000 with your alien registration details. Before buying the university plan, ask the school for its coverage dates, exclusions, reimbursement limits, cancellation or refund rules, and whether it is mandatory. Compare those dates and benefits with NHIS rather than assuming the plans are substitutes; private student insurance may cover items or periods differently.
