What do I need to open a bank account in Korea as a foreigner, and which bank is easiest?

Suda Boonmee ·

I arrived in Korea recently and was told I need a bank account to get paid. I'm confused about whether my alien registration card alone is enough or if I also need extra documents like proof of employment. Which banks are foreigner-friendly with English support, and can I get mobile banking and a check card at the same time?

With your alien registration card and passport, you can open an account at most banks. Because of anti-fraud and money-laundering rules, your first account is often issued as a limited account, meaning low daily transfer and withdrawal limits. To raise the limits or get a regular account, bring documents that prove a reason for banking, such as an employment certificate, work contract, utility bills, or a lease. For English support and experience with foreigners, Hana, Shinhan, Woori, and KB Kookmin are commonly recommended, and branches in areas with many foreigners often have interpreters. When you open the account you can sign up for the mobile banking app and request a check card at the same time; the card usually arrives by mail within one to two weeks, or some branches issue it on the spot. Be sure to bring your alien registration card, passport, and a Korean phone number registered in your name.
