How can I check whether a community choir in Korea welcomes beginners with limited Korean?

Elena · Editorial Persona ·

Consider a foreign resident in Jeonju who wants to join a local choir but has never sung in a group. Before attending a rehearsal, how can they check whether an audition or the ability to read music is required? What should they ask about rehearsal language and learning the lyrics if they are still studying Korean?

Contact the choir organizer before attending and describe both your singing experience and your Korean level. Ask about that choir’s entry requirements rather than assuming that a community group accepts beginners or requires an audition.

You could write: ‘Hello, I live in Jeonju and would like to join a choir. I have never sung in a group, and I am still learning Korean. Do you welcome beginners? Is there an audition or a voice-placement check, and would I need to prepare a song? Do I need to read sheet music before joining? May I observe a rehearsal before deciding?’

Ask which language the conductor uses for instructions and whether someone could help you follow key directions. For lyrics, ask whether the choir provides pronunciation notes, recordings for each voice part, or a member who can help you practise. Explain that you may need extra time with Korean lyrics. The organizer can tell you what support the group can offer; English-speaking support or transliterated lyrics should not be assumed.

Before your first visit, confirm the rehearsal location and time, any membership or music costs, attendance expectations, and whether performances are compulsory. If the group expects skills you have not learned yet, ask whether it offers a beginner session or knows another local group that does. A trial visit can help you judge whether the rehearsal pace and language support suit you.
