Can I get a Korean credit card as a foreigner?
I have been living in Korea for 1 year on an E-7 visa. I have a Korean bank account and steady income. Is it possible to get a Korean credit card? If so, which banks are most foreigner-friendly?
My salary is about 4 million KRW/month. I mainly want a credit card for:
- Building credit history in Korea
- Getting cashback/points
- Easier online shopping (some sites don't accept debit cards)

Hi CreditSeeker,
Yes, foreigners can absolutely get a Korean credit card. With a stable income and one year of residency, you are in a good position to apply.
Not all banks make it easy for foreigners, but a few tend to have smoother processes. Shinhan Bank is generally considered the most foreigner-friendly, with many branches having English-speaking staff and a relatively straightforward application process. Hana Bank also has good foreigner support, especially if you already have an account with them. And Woori Bank offers several credit card options for foreign residents with a dedicated global banking team.
For the application, you will need your Alien Registration Card (ARC), proof of income such as pay stubs for the last 3 months or an employment certificate, a Korean bank account with at least 6 months of transaction history, and a Korean phone number. With a salary of 4 million KRW per month, you should have no trouble meeting the income requirements. Most banks look for at least 3 months of steady income in Korea.
For cashback and online shopping, some cards to look into are the Shinhan Deep Dream which offers solid cashback on general spending and online purchases, the Hana 1Q card with good rewards for everyday spending and low annual fees, and Woori Card which has various cashback tiers depending on monthly spending.
One tip: some Korean online shopping sites require specific payment authentication apps like ISP or Paybooc, so make sure to install those once you receive your card. It makes online payments much smoother.
Korean credit scoring works differently from Western systems. Your score is managed by NICE and KCB. Simply using your credit card regularly and paying on time each month will build your score over time. You can check your credit score for free through the NICE or KCB apps.
I would suggest visiting a branch in person for your first application rather than applying online. It tends to go faster for foreign residents, and the staff can help you pick the best card for your spending habits. Good luck!
