Pet insurance is still relatively young in Korea but has grown significantly in the last few years. As of 2026, several major insurers offer it including Meritz Fire and Marine, Samsung Fire, DB Insurance, KB Insurance, and Hyundai Marine.

What is typically covered. Most policies cover accidents, illness (after waiting periods), surgery, hospitalization, and outpatient visits up to a limit. Some include dental, MRI, and chronic conditions. Pre-existing conditions are excluded, and age limits typically cap enrollment at 7 to 10 years old, though some allow up to 15.

Cost varies by pet type, age, and breed. For a young dog or cat, expect monthly premiums of 30,000 to 70,000 won. Some breeds with hereditary issues (French Bulldogs, Maltese) cost more. Coverage typically reimburses 50 to 80 percent of covered expenses after a deductible.

For foreigners, the process is similar to Korean residents. You need your ARC, pet registration (mandatory for dogs in Korea), and vaccination records. Some insurers offer English service. Meritz Pet Insurance is often recommended for its broader coverage and easier claims.

Is it worth it. For a healthy young pet, you may spend more on premiums than vet bills. For older pets or specific breeds prone to surgery, insurance can save a fortune. Major surgeries in Korea can cost 3 to 10 million won, so insurance often pays for itself with a single hospitalization.
