A Jeonju bibimbap and makgeolli alley tour catches both pillars of Jeonju cuisine in one trip.
Why Jeonju bibimbap
Jeonju bibimbap is different: rice cooked in bean-sprout broth, nearly thirty individually seasoned vegetables, and traditionally fermented gochujang, served in a brass yugi bowl.
Three makgeolli alleys
- Samcheon-dong: old-shop, low-table atmosphere
- Seosin-dong: a wider range of side dishes
- Nambu Market Cheongnyeonmol: a younger, indoor vibe
At many places, ordering one kettle brings a table full of free sides like pajeon, dubu-kimchi, and acorn jelly. Jeonju makgeolli is around 6% alcohol, so pace yourself from the first glass.
Suggested route
Start in Samcheon-dong around 6pm for two or three spots, then take a 10-minute taxi to Seosin-dong.
