The Korean Red Cross (대한적십자사) offers a range of services that are available to foreigners as well as Koreans. Here are the main programs.
Emergency assistance. The Red Cross provides emergency relief during disasters (floods, fires, typhoons) including temporary shelter, food, clothing, and basic supplies. Foreigners affected by disasters can receive help regardless of visa status by registering at the nearest Red Cross emergency response center. During large incidents, the Korean government often coordinates with the Red Cross for foreign victim support.
Blood donation. Foreign residents can donate blood at any Red Cross blood center if they meet basic eligibility (age 17 to 69, weight over 50 kg for men or 45 kg for women, in good health, and meeting time since last travel to certain regions). Bring your passport or ARC. Each donation includes a free health screening. Blood centers are in major cities including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, and Incheon.
First aid and CPR training. The Red Cross runs affordable certification courses in English at some locations, especially Seoul. Useful for teachers, parents, and outdoor enthusiasts. Cost is typically 30,000 to 80,000 won.
Migrant and multicultural support. Some Red Cross branches partner with multicultural family centers to provide Korean lessons, translation help, and seasonal support like winter heating aid for low-income foreign households.
Volunteering. Foreigners can volunteer with the Red Cross in many activities, from disaster preparation to social welfare. Search redcross.or.kr in English mode or call 1577-8179 for information on programs near you.
