What ride-hailing and transportation apps are available in Korea? How do they compare, and which ones should I use?

The main ride-hailing app you'll want is Kakao T, with Uber as a useful secondary option. Kakao T has roughly 80% market share for taxis and it works seamlessly because it's integrated with the regular taxi fleet, not a separate driver network. You can book standard taxis, premium Black, large vans (Venti), designated drivers (대리운전 for when you've been drinking), and even shared rides through the same app. Payment runs through Kakao Pay, a registered credit card, or cash to the driver. The app has English mode, and drivers receive your destination automatically so language is rarely an issue. Fares are the regular metered rate plus a small platform fee (around 1,000 to 3,000 won during surge hours).

Uber operates in Korea but in a different form than overseas — it partners with licensed taxi drivers rather than running its own driver network, so functionally it overlaps with Kakao T but with a smaller pool of available cars. It's useful if you already have an Uber account and don't want to set up a Korean phone number to register for Kakao, especially as a short-term visitor. UT (Uber Taxi) is the rebranded version you'll see in some cities. Pricing is similar to Kakao T.

For airport transfers, Kakao T's Venti (large van) or its pre-booked airport service is reliable and runs around 70,000 to 90,000 won from Incheon to central Seoul. The Airport Limousine bus app and AREX (express train) are far cheaper alternatives — AREX is 11,000 won and takes 45 minutes to Seoul Station.

For longer intercity trips, there's no real ride-hailing equivalent. Use KTX or SRT high-speed trains booked through the Korail Talk or SR app, or express buses through the Kobus app. Far cheaper than a long-distance taxi. Tada (타다) used to be a major alternative but has shrunk significantly after regulatory changes and now mostly runs premium chauffeur services. iM 택시 and 마카롱 택시 are smaller regional alternatives in Daegu and a few other cities.

A few tips: Naver Map and Kakao Map both let you call a taxi directly from a destination pin without opening Kakao T separately, which is handy when you're already navigating. T-money (transit card) doesn't work for app-booked rides but works for flagged taxis if you pay cash-equivalent. For accessibility, Kakao T has wheelchair-accessible taxi requests but availability is limited outside Seoul.
