Korean department stores seem massive and very different from what I am used to. What are the major chains, how do they work, and is it worth shopping there? Are the prices reasonable or is everything overpriced?

Korean department stores (백화점) really are massive, often 8-12 floors with everything from luxury fashion to food halls. The big chains are Lotte (Myeongdong, Jamsil), Shinsegae (Gangnam, Centum City Busan which is the world's largest), Hyundai (Yeouido, Apgujeong), and Galleria (Apgujeong, more luxury-focused).
They're not always overpriced — the basement food halls (지하 식품관) are genuinely excellent value with fresh produce, prepared meals, bakeries, and ready-to-eat counters that locals love. The luxury upper floors are pricey, but seasonal sales in January and July, plus the department store credit card discounts, can bring prices down 20-40%. Tourist tax refunds work at most counters with a passport. Worth visiting at least once just for the food court experience.
