How do noraebangs work in Korea? What should foreigners know about Korean karaoke culture, costs, and how to get the most out of the experience?

Noraebang is one of the most uniquely Korean experiences and you should definitely try it. They are basically private karaoke rooms (not open spaces like in some countries) where you and your group get a room to yourselves.

How it works. Walk in and the staff will assign you a room based on group size. You pay by the hour, typically 15,000 to 30,000 won per hour for the whole room. Smaller rooms for 2 to 3 people are cheaper. You order drinks and snacks separately (juice, beer, snacks, fruit plates). Many places give you free service time (서비스), adding 10 to 30 extra minutes when you book a longer slot.

The machines have an English mode that includes Western pop, K-pop English versions, and a surprising number of musicals and movie soundtracks. You search by song number (printed in song books) or title. Most modern noraebangs let you queue songs, adjust pitch and tempo, and use tambourines and microphones provided.

Coin noraebangs (코인노래방) are cheaper and growing in popularity, especially for solo singers. You pay per song (500 to 1,000 won) or per 20 minutes (4,000 to 6,000 won) and use a private booth. No drinks or food usually.

Etiquette is relaxed since it is private. Pass the mic around, encourage shy singers, and clap. Hwaiting and have fun.
