How does the public bicycle rental system work in Seoul? Can I cycle around the city safely, and what are the rules?

Seoul Bike (also called Ttareungi, 따릉이) is the public bicycle rental system run by the city. It has over 40,000 bikes at thousands of stations and is one of the most affordable ways to explore Seoul.
How to use. Download the Seoul Bike app (available in English) or rent through tmoney.co.kr. Foreigners can register using their ARC or passport. Payment is via Korean credit card or T-money. A 1-hour pass is 1,000 won, daily pass 2,000 won, monthly 5,000 won. The QR code on each bike unlocks it via the app.
Return the bike to any official station within your time limit. If you exceed the time, additional fees apply per 30 minutes. The bikes are basic city bikes (3-speed) with baskets, suitable for casual rides but not long climbs.
Safety and rules. Korean law requires bicycles to follow road rules. Helmets are recommended but not legally required for adults. Cycling on sidewalks is technically prohibited but widely tolerated except in crowded shopping districts. The Han River bike paths (around 80 km of dedicated trails) are the safest and most scenic option. Watch for e-scooters and pedestrians, especially near subway exits.
For longer rides, consider renting from private shops near the Han River parks (around 10,000 to 15,000 won for a half day) where you can get road bikes or e-bikes.
