How do Korean school PTAs and parent groups work, and how can I participate as a foreign parent?

Korean schools do have parent organizations — the 학부모회 (parents' association) and the more formal 학교운영위원회 (school operating committee) — plus class-level parent groups that often coordinate through KakaoTalk chat rooms. As a foreign parent you're welcome to participate; involvement ranges from volunteering for events, library or traffic-safety duty, and field-trip help, to attending parent meetings and open-class days (공개수업). The practical hurdle is usually language, so connect with the homeroom teacher early, ask to be added to the class parent KakaoTalk group, and use a translation app for the messages; many schools and education offices now have multicultural-family support staff who can help bridge communication. Showing up to open-class days and a couple of volunteer slots is the easiest, lowest-pressure way to get included.
