The toilet in our rented villa keeps getting clogged. What's involved in replacing a toilet? What's the cost, and do I need a plumber?

Repeated toilet clogs in a Korean villa usually point to one of three issues: the toilet itself is old and the flush mechanism is weak (common in 1990s-2000s villas), the drain pipe is partially blocked deeper down, or your apartment uses an older 30mm drain instead of the modern 75mm. Before replacing the toilet, try these in order: Use a heavy-duty plunger (뚫어뻥) from Daiso (5,000 won), pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water plus dish soap and wait 30 minutes, or try a drain snake (배관 청소기, 15,000 won at Coupang).

If the issue persists, calling a plumber (배관공) is the cheaper first step before replacement. Use the Soomgo (숨고) app or just search 배관 + your district on Naver. A plumber visit costs 50,000 to 80,000 won, and they can use professional equipment to clear deep blockages or assess the actual problem. Many landlords are responsible for major plumbing in villas, so check your contract and contact the landlord (집주인) first.

If replacement is needed, a standard Korean toilet (양변기) installation runs 250,000 to 500,000 won total: 150,000 to 300,000 won for the toilet (Inus, Daelim, Royal & Co are the main brands sold at Coupang and Lotte Hi-Mart) and 100,000 to 200,000 won for installation. Premium models with bidet seats (비데 일체형) cost 500,000 to 1,500,000 won. Most plumbers can do same-day installation if you order the toilet ahead. A bidet seat alone (비데, 200,000 to 500,000 won) attaches to your existing toilet and is a popular upgrade.

Important: In Korea, toilet paper goes in a bin next to the toilet at older buildings (sewage systems can't always handle TP), so check yours. If your villa has a 30mm drain, you cannot legally upgrade to 75mm without major plumbing work, so opt for a low-flow modern toilet designed for narrow drains. The landlord pays for repairs caused by old infrastructure, and you pay only if a tenant action caused the damage. The Seoul Global Center can mediate landlord disputes if needed.
