I don't speak much Korean and I find ordering food really stressful. What are the essential phrases I need to know to order food at restaurants, cafes, and street stalls in Korea?

You do not need much Korean to order food, but a few key phrases will make everything smoother. Here are the essentials.

When entering. 안녕하세요 (annyeonghaseyo, hello) and 몇 명이세요 (how many people, the staff will ask). Just hold up the number of fingers or say the number: 한 명 (1), 두 명 (2), 세 명 (3), 네 명 (4).

Ordering. Point at the menu and say 이거 주세요 (igeo juseyo, this please). For multiples, 이거 두 개 주세요 (two of these please). To call the staff, say 저기요 (jeogiyo, excuse me) or 사장님 (sajangnim, owner/sir/ma'am). Many restaurants have call buttons on the table you press.

Asking about food. 매워요 (maewoyo, is it spicy)? 안 매워요 (an maewoyo, not spicy please). 채식이에요 (chaesigieyo, vegetarian)? 고기 없어요 (gogi eopseoyo, no meat please).

Paying. 계산이요 (gyesaniyo, check please) or 얼마예요 (eolmayeyo, how much). Most places accept card. For cash say 현금 (hyeongeum, cash). Tipping is not customary.

Useful at cafes. 아이스 아메리카노 (iseu amerikano), 따뜻한 라떼 (ttatteuthan latte, hot latte), 테이크아웃 (teikeuauteu, takeaway), 매장에서 (maejangeseo, dine in).

Useful at street stalls. 떡볶이 (tteokbokki), 김밥 (gimbap), 어묵 (eomuk, fish cake). Just say the food name plus 주세요. Papago app camera mode helps with handwritten menu boards. Most younger staff will understand simple English.
