I keep hearing about the Korean monsoon season (jangma) and how dangerous flooding can be. When does it happen, how bad does it get, and how should I prepare?

Jangma, the Korean monsoon, typically runs from late June through July, bringing weeks of heavy, sometimes torrential rain, and it can be followed by typhoon season into August and September. It varies year to year, but some downpours are intense enough to cause flash flooding in low-lying areas, flooded basements and semi-basement homes, and submerged roads and underpasses. To prepare, if you live in a low-lying or semi-basement unit, know where water could enter, keep valuables and electronics off the floor, and have water barriers ready if your area is prone. Keep an emergency kit with a flashlight, power bank, water, and important documents in a waterproof bag. Enable emergency alerts on your phone; the government sends disaster texts, and apps like Emergency Ready have some English. During heavy rain, avoid underground parking, underpasses, riverside paths, and mountain valleys, which can flood with deadly speed, and never drive through flooded roads. Check forecasts on the Korea Meteorological Administration app, and call 119 for emergencies or 120 for city help if flooding threatens your home.
