Does anyone know how to obtain an FBI background check from the US while living in Korea? I need it for a visa change.

Getting an FBI background check from Korea is doable but takes some planning. There are two main routes: doing it yourself or using an FBI-approved channeler.

DIY route through FBI directly. You need to submit fingerprint cards (form FD-258) along with a request form and payment. The challenge is getting fingerprints taken in Korea. The US Embassy in Seoul used to offer this service but stopped years ago. Most people now visit a Korean police station that offers fingerprinting for international purposes, or use a private agency in Seoul that offers fingerprint services for around 50,000 to 100,000 won. The mailed result takes 8 to 12 weeks.

Faster route through an FBI-approved channeler. Companies like Accurate Biometrics, Fieldprint, or National Background Check can process electronically submitted prints and return results in 3 to 5 business days. Cost is around 50 to 100 USD plus the fingerprinting fee. You still need physical fingerprints, but the turnaround is dramatically faster.

For visa apostille requirements, after receiving the FBI report you need to send it to the US Department of State for apostille, then potentially have it translated and notarized in Korea. Building this entire chain takes 4 to 12 weeks, so start early.
