I keep hearing about health checkups in Korea. How does the system work, what is included for free through NHIS, and what about the comprehensive premium checkups Korea is famous for?
1 Answer
Korea's health checkup system has two layers. First, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) provides a free general health screening, typically every two years for enrolled members including foreign subscribers, covering basics like blood pressure, blood and urine tests, cholesterol, vision and hearing, chest X-ray, and age-based cancer screenings. You get a notice when you are due, and you book at a designated clinic or hospital with your ID. Second, the famous comprehensive premium checkups are optional paid packages at hospital health-promotion centers, ranging from around 300,000 won to well over a million depending on whether they include endoscopy, ultrasound, CT, or MRI. Many employers cover or subsidize an annual comprehensive checkup. For foreigners, large hospitals like Severance, Asan, Samsung, and university hospitals have international health screening centers with English service and same-day multi-test packages. If you are NHIS-enrolled, use the free screening first, then add a paid package if you want the deeper imaging.
