I'm a foreigner living in Korea and want to start dating. What should I know about Korean dating culture? Are there specific customs, apps, or expectations I should be aware of?

Dating in Korea has some unique aspects compared to Western countries. Korean dating culture is very couple-oriented. Anniversary celebrations are a big deal, with couples marking their 100th day, 200th day, and so on. Matching outfits (couple looks) are common and seen as sweet rather than cheesy. Communication tends to be frequent, and it is normal for couples to text throughout the day.

For meeting people, Bumble and Hinge are popular among foreigners and internationally-minded Koreans. MEEFF is a Korea-specific app designed for connecting foreigners and Koreans, originally for language exchange but widely used for dating too. The concept of 소개팅 (blind dates arranged through mutual friends) is very common in Korea, so let your Korean friends know you are interested and they might set something up. When it comes to paying, traditionally the man pays for meals and the woman might cover coffee or desserts, but younger couples increasingly split or take turns. Learning even basic Korean phrases goes a long way in making a good impression. One cultural note is that public displays of affection are becoming more accepted but are still less common than in Western countries.
